Adobe Photoshop is a great application that can be enjoyed by both professionals and armatures at any skill level. You can do as little as cropping an image or as much as your creativity allows. However, your skill level would dictate what version you would be best suited for. Beginners excel in Photoshop Elements and can be purchased for as little as $40.00. This is because of its user-friendly interface and abundance of help available in on-line and print tutorials/guidebooks. Once a beginner masters the 'elemental' foundations of the program, they can easily graduate to the full Creative Suite if desired. The full Creative Suite is catered to people who are a bit more advanced in techniques, mainly professionals but many die-hard armatures use it as well.
Professionals include graphic designers, web designers and photographers, but can include many more occupations as well. Anyone who needs/wants to manipulate an image will find a great use for the Adobe family of products. Adobe.com offers free 30-day trial downloads of most of their products so you can experiment with them before committing to purchase a title which can get pricey.
(As a sidenote, I would like to add, that Photoshop has a rather steep learning curve, and may be frustrating for beginners at first.)
