Germany was fighting a two-front war with France and Britain in the west and Russia in the East. German forces dug in for the winter where they had halted. The British and French, meanwhile, lacked the resources to mount large scale offensives, so they dug in and prepared for offensives in 1915. Gradually a 400 mile line of static trench defenses existed forcing the development of trench warfare tactics.

Trench warfare was not invented. It happened. Trenches have been dug in warfare from the Trojan War onward, but trench warfare was a result of new weapons and old tactics. Defense became stronger than offense. The warplane was not sufficiently advanced to break this stalemate, and the tank was not properly used. Plan 1919 of the British General JC Fuller was designed to overcome these deficiencies, but Germany ran out of steam in 1918 before it could be implemented. Yet, after the surrender Germany was quicker to adopt the principles of mobile warfare, and they were used to great effect in the first half of the next war.

I'd like to fix this answer. It WAS actually invented by Maori warriors of New Zealand during the New Zealand wars in the 19th century. That's how the British got a hold of it as they were fighting against the Maori for control of NZ.

The fact that all sides were equal. The Schleiffen plan forced France and Germany to rush to the sea to break through each others defences. The battle of Ypres occured, however both sides failed to break through, so they resorted to defending themselves. Each side dug a huge line of trenches from the Belgian Coast to the Swiss border with France.

Now each side had great defence, too great to be attacked succesfully. So a trend of not attacking came in to existance.

The Trench consisted of an area to sleep (Dugout), a step to kneel on when shooting (Fire step), an area to defacate and throw dead bodies in to (the space under the Duck board) and sandbags on either side of the opening to protect the soldiers heads from being hit by shrapnel.

No mans land made it very hard to attack, as to get near the opposing sides trenches you had to run through an open space with no shelter from fire.

1864 or 5 late in the civil war the south, beaten, settled into an intense defensive posture. Technology had overcome war tactics, so they could no longer afford to charge across the field's, and neither could the north.

Trench warfare began in the second World War. No one in particular invented it. It was more that it was necessary due to the weaponry of the time.
