Yes people do still use snow chain in the north where it snows very often. They are good for maintain traction on a very snowy road. I recommend putting them on your car if you are going out when it is snowing hard.

How to Find the Best Tractor Tire Chains?

Tractor tire chains help tractors get a foothold on sloppy and icy parts of a field. Sometimes the conditions of a field are so bad that the engine isn’t enough to pull the tractor along. What it needs is more traction. Tractor tire chains are the best way to accomplish this task. But how do you find the best deal on a tractor tire chain? This article is designed to show you how to get the best tractor tire chain for your money. CHECK OWNERS MANUAL Always check your tractors owner’s manual before purchasing tractor tire chains. The manual will give you all of the necessary specs of your tractor. Don’t assume anything when making this important purchase. DETERMINE ITS USES It’s important to note the types of conditions that your tractor is sure to face. Icy and snow covered fields will require a different chain from a dry field. This will play a huge role in the type of tractor tire chain that you select. AUCTIONS One way to find cheap and used tractor tire chains is to visit a local farm auction. Keep in mind that the normal life expectancy of five years will be lower when purchasing used chains. But auctions are a great way to find a chain replacement quickly and easily so that you can get back to plowing your fields. DEALERS If you want professional services and new chains and you can afford the extra money, then take your tractor back to the professionals. They possess all of the tools and knowledge that will allow them to install the new tractor tire chains perfectly. The problem with doing it yourself is that if the chains are not installed perfectly, they will either be too loose or too tight: both conditions dramatically lower the life expectancy. DECIDING THE TYPE OF CHAIN Tractor tire chains come in a lot of different sizes and designs. For example, cross chains are designed to improve steering and maneuverability and V-Bar chains are designed for snowy conditions. It’s important that you choose the tractor tire chain that best suits your individual needs.

How To Install Snow Tire Chains?

Driving on roads packed with snow or ice is treacherous. Even with the best four-wheel-drive vehicle, there is no way to gain traction on ice with rubber tires - unless chains are added. When installed properly on tires, chains will not only save the car from peril, but also the passengers, which are the most precious cargo. This article will explain how to install tire chains for safe winter driving. The first step, if tire chains are not available, is to purchase a good set of chains. Measure the tires first to determine which size will be used. Determine whether the car is front-wheel, back-wheel or four-wheel drive. If the vehicle is four-wheel drive, it is best to purchase chains for each wheel. Always be sure the chains are placed on the prominent set of wheels. For example, if the car is front-wheel drive, place the chains on the front set of wheels, not the back ones. Likewise, if the car is back-wheel drive, place the chains on the back set of wheels. The prominent set of wheels is where the car uses its initial power to pick up traction. Consult the manual to determine which type of chains to use, considering any clearance advice present. If unsure, consult the internet or an auto shop attendant in a supply store where chains are sold. After the appropriate chains have been purchased, pull the car completely off the road when ready to install the chains. Turn on emergency lights and set the emergency brake. Lay the chains out flat and ensure they are not twisted or cinched anywhere. Carefully pull them up over the tires, making sure that the J-hook stays on the inside. Cross member end hooks are placed against the sides of the tires on the smooth side. Connect the speed hooks and J-hooks by the third link away from the other chain. Pull the slack toward the chest. Next, pull the car slightly forward. Get out and pull the slack toward the chest again. Lever fasteners must be connected through the third links opposite from the other chain side. Pivot the levers and attach them under the keeper links. Pull forward again, then check the slack. If there is slack, pull it tight and refasten the links. Chains are especially important when driving through a mountain pass with snow. During a downhill trek, they may save the driver and passengers from a fatal accident.
