The Gateway Arch is part of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial ( http://www.nps.gov/jeff/ ). The arch symbolizes "the spirit of the western pioneers." In the 19th century, St. Louis was a hub for westward-bound settlers; it is also where the Lewis & Clark Expedition began its voyage after Jefferson's completion of the Louisiana Purchase.
Today, the site includes Gateway Arch, the Museum of Westward Expansion, and St. Louis' Old Courthouse.
The arch serves no practical function except as a decorative landmark and a tribute to a unique period in world history. Visitors can ride a tram through the arch to the top.

St. Louis ARCH symbolizationThe St. Louis arch symbolizes the gateway to the west. In the late 1800's and early 1900's, St. Louis was considered the west. Builders constructed the arch to symbolize St. Louis as the city of the west. back then, it was known as St. Louis being the west; the territory beyond was being explored by Louis and Clark at the time the arch was built. It took over 2 years to construct the arch, or otherwise called, the St. Louis Gateway.
