There is more than one country that has a currency called pounds:

  • Pound sterling (represented by the pound sign: "£", code: GBP), the currency of the United Kingdom, and many of its overseas territories.
  • Egyptian pound (Arabic: الجنيه المصرى‎, sign: E£ code: EGP)
  • Lebanese pound (sign: £ or L£, code: LBP). Also called the livre.
  • South Sudanese pound (code: SSP)
  • Sudanese pound (Arabic: جنيه سوداني, code: SDG)
  • Syrian pound (Arabic: الليرة السورية, sign: LS or £S, code: SYP). Also called the livre.

For the Egyptian, Lebanese, Sudan and Syrian pounds, the name "pound" is just a convenient translation into English. The original name is in Arabic.

Britain used to use "new pence". In 1971, when decimalisation occurred, the currency was changed.

"Old" money: £1 = 20 Shillings. 1 Shilling = 12d (d = Pence)

"New" money: £1 = 100p (p = new pence).

The coins had " new penny" or "new pence" marked on them.

After 10 years (1981), the "new" was dropped, and all coins now say just "penny" or "pence".
