It's used to connect widely-separated groups of users. Example: You're the IT lead for a company that makes stuff for the army. You've got branch offices outside Fort Bragg, Fort Hood, Fort Riley and Fort Lewis--and they all need connectivity to an IBM Z/Server in Seattle. The internet won't work (although it is a WAN) because you're passing 5GB files and can't afford any dropouts, so you put two satellite dishes on the roof of each branch, point each at a different geostationary bird, and set up redundant lines of communication. Although i can't explain more on this topic here, please read this article to more about How a wan can be used - http://www.wanredundancy.org/resources/wan-routing/introduction-to-wide-area-networks/wide-area-network-wan.html
it helps easy set-up of the network to be use.

there are a few different topologies when you are talking about WAN's but remember WAN's topologies are different than LAN's because of the area they cover. But there are bus wan, ring wan, star wan, full mesh wan, partial mesh wan, and tiered wan. as far as a drawback to bus topology is that each site in the wan bus topolgy depends on every other site in the network to transmit and receive its traffic.
