The Cowardly Lion is the character that looks for courage in "The Wizard of Oz," both as the original book by Lyman Frank Baum (May 15, 1856-May 6, 1919) and as the 1939 film version.

Specifically, the Cowardly Lion is last to make up the threesome of good friends with whom Dorothy and Toto share their adventures in the land of Oz. Early on, he learns that his roar scares away just about everyone and everything that scares him. He tries the same ploy when Dorothy walks through the wooded stretch of the Yellow Brick Road. He bounds out with a roar and knocks over the Scarecrow and then the Tin Woodman. Toto bravely confronts him, and is on the point of biting, when Dorothy slaps the Lion on the nose. That cows the Lion, out comes his story, and thus ends his friendless past.

Well, the Wizard was the hero. Because he gave the Lion courage, the Tin Man a heart and the Scarecrow a brain. Of course, he left Dorothy behind. But that was an accident. So I still think he should be the hero.
