No, the Persians wanted to control Greece. But Greece wanted to be independent so they revolted against the Perisna rule
Sparta wanted their men in the army because they wanted keep control over the helots. Helots were captured enslaved workers. There was so many helots that the Spartans thought that someday they would rebel. To maintain the control of the helots the Spartans started put their men in the army.
Athens loved to learn, they did fight in wars, and they were central government. Sparta loved to fight, they had some girls play sports too! They people were really strong, so that helped them in war. Sparta wanted to be in control, they both go to war. That brings Greece down to distruction.
Both Athens and Sparta were powerful cities at that time (before the Peloponnesian War). But when Spartians understood that Athens started becoming dengerously powerful, started the conflict with Athens. Spartians, as a clearly war civilisation, always wanted to be the leading power..
The most famous city states in ancient Greece were Athens and Sparta. Dont think of Greece as a single country, they never were, more like every city having its own rules laws and independance from all others occasionally some would be able to influence others with military alliances and such but all were very independent.
All Spartans wanted to be soldiers, and to fulfill their duty as Spartans, by dying in battle.
