On August 8, 1861 Major General George B. McClellan was alarmed that Washington DC was in serious danger. He informed General in Chief Winfield Scott that the capitol was about to face 100,000 Rebel soldiers. At this time, that was double the size of the Army of the Potomac that McClellan was training. It is believed now that the the source of this vital information was from the Pinkerton detective agency that McClellan had first contacted when he was stationed in Ohio, before President Lincoln called him to Washington DC.
General George B. McClellan was an excellent commander when it came to building and properly organizing troops. He displayed that when US President Lincoln summoned him to Washington DC in the Summer of 1861. McClellan was also a great military strategist. He made superb operational and battle strategies. His problems were over estimating the size of armies of the South he had to face and always asking for more troops. He mistakenly relied all too often on Allan Pinkerton to gage for him the troop strength of the Confederates. He was reluctant to march into battle unless he believed he had an overwhelming advantage. Additionally, he and US President Lincoln differed on the way to conduct the war. This eventually led to his battlefield career. He was dismissed from commanding the Army of the Potomac in November of 862 and was transferred to Trenton, NJ.

The Battle of Gaines's Mill had been a Union victory. The entrenched Union forces foiled all of General Lee's attempts to break through the Union's lines and attempt to destroy the Army of the Potomac. McClellan chose to retreat but not after Union generals Joseph Hooker and Philip Kearny pleaded their case for a counterattack to McClellan. McClellan saw only danger by remaining on the field of battle and he pursued his retreat to Harrison's Landing.
