The father of Augustus was named Gaius Octiavius, just as was the original name of Augustus's. He was a Roman official who had reached the office of praetor and was a governor of Macedonia. He is the one who finally ended the Spartacus situation. Remnants of Spartacus' slave army had taken over the town of Thurii and Octavius the Elder cleared them out. For this the senate voted him the honorific name of Thurinus. That's why sometimes Octavian is known as Gaius Octavius Thurinus, as the name was passed down from his father.
