Auschwitz, which was really a network of concentration and death camps, was built by Nazi Germans to murder all possible "enemies" of Nazi Germany. The network included Auschwitz I, II (or Birkenau), III and other subcamps. In total, the victims included at least 960,000 murdered Jews, who died mainly in Auschwitz Birkenau. Other victims included approximately 74,000 Poles (Auschwitz I - Poles were the first prisoners to arrive in Auschwitz), 21,000 Roma (Gypsies), and 15,000 Soviet prisoners of war; and 10,000-15,000 members of other nationalities (Soviet civilians, Czechs, Yugoslavs, French, Germans, and Austrians).source: United States Holocaust Museum.
