Capricorn was named after the Goat-fish Oannes (in persian). Basically Capricorn was a mythic creature, a water-god of the ancients.
They are named after a constellation during the winter solstice (Capricorn) and Cancer is named after a constellation during the summer solstice.
Capricorn.
The Tropic of Capricorn and Tropic of Cancer are named after the zodiac signs Capricorn and Cancer because, at the time they were named, these were the zodiac signs where the sun was located during the solstices in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres respectively. The solstices mark the points where the sun appears to reach its highest and lowest points in the sky.
Just because the people who named them thought that would be a good name. It's like asking why the zodiacs are called cancer and/or capricorn
Tropic of cancer Equator Tropic of Capricorn
No "named" line of longitude crosses Australia. The Tropic of Capricorn (latitude) crosses Australia.

The Tropic of Capricorn is in the southern hemisphere; the Tropic of Cancer is in the northern hemisphere. The way to remember is at the time of year when the sun is directly over the Tropic of Capricorn, the sun was in the constellation of Capricorn back when the tropics were named.
These were named approx. 2000 years ago when 1) the sun was positioned in the Cancer constellation during the June solstice, and 2) the sun was positioned in the Capricorn constellation during the December solstice.
The Tropic of Capricorn is so named because about 2000 years ago the sun was entering the constellation Capricornus on the December solstice. In modern times the sun appears in the constellation Sagittarius during this time. The change is due to precession of the equinoxes!!
One major line of latitude named the Tropic of Capricorn is located at 23.5 degrees south latitude.
