Chester Arthur was associated with the Stawarts, based in New York . His nomination for vice-president was secured by the Stalwarts, who were a faction within the Rebublican Party, led by Senator Roscoe Conklin. They favored traditional machine politics, which relied on political patronage. They contended with the "Half-breeds" for control of the party. The Half-breeds wanted political reform and civil-service to replace patronage and got James Garfield nomininated for President. Once Arthur became President, he virtually deserted the Stalwarts and worked for civil service reform, which cost him the nomination for president 4 years later.
