The only Colonel Malone I've heard of commanded the New Zealand Wellington Battalion at Gallipoli. He was killed in action on the 8th of August, 1915 during the Battle of Chunuk Bair. He was hit by "friendly fire" from a British naval gun and died on the spot. He was infamous for refusing to send his men over the top after the Aucklanders had been cut to pieces by Turkish machine guns. He sent them over at dawn the following day and they took the peak. The British tried to blame the failure of Chunuk Bair on him, but in reality it was the British troops that relieved the Wellington Battalion that lost the peak.
