Kitty was Anne's name for her diary, a name she borrowed from one of her favorite books "The High School Years of Joop ter Heul". The book is written as a series of letters form Joop to her friends, and her closest friend is a girl named "Kitty Francken". Anne also had a friend of her own names Kitty Egyedi, but neither researchers - nor Kitty Egyedi herself - believe that Anne meant Kitty Egyedi in her diary - she merely called the diary "Kitty".

Jo Kleiman was one of the people who helped hide Anne Frank and her family during the Holocaust. He worked at Otto Frank's company and played a key role in providing food, supplies, and support to the Frank family while they were in hiding. He also helped preserve Anne's diary after the family was captured.

Jo Kleiman had been a friend and business associate of Otto's since 1923. He ran the day-to-day Opekta part of the business, Mr. Kugler being more caught up with the Pectakon

side of things. Kleiman had a daughter Anne's age, and was sympathetic to her predicament, going out of his way to bring her books from the library that she specifically requested, and things like that.
