The book is written as a series of letters form Joop to her friends, and her closest friend is a girl named "Kitty Francken". Anne also had a friend of her own names Kitty Egyedi, but neither researchers - nor Kitty Egyedi herself - believe that Anne meant Kitty Egyedi in her diary - she merely called the diary "Kitty".

Jo Kleiman was one of the people who helped hide Anne Frank and her family during the Holocaust. He worked at Otto Frank's company and played a key role in providing food, supplies, and support to the Frank family while they were in hiding. He also helped preserve Anne's diary after the family was captured.

side of things. Kleiman had a daughter Anne's age, and was sympathetic to her predicament, going out of his way to bring her books from the library that she specifically requested, and things like that.
