It is still unknown. A copy of an application for naturalisation as a US Citizen was presented showing the applicant as Mrs. Nawal Abdel-Aziz and her signature but was finally rejected as evidence by the Egyptian courts since copy had the phrase "unauthorised copy" repeatedly all over it.
The NYTimes reported in its April 4th, 2012 edition that they found her in the LA county voter database--which implies that she is a citizen. However, if one goes to register to vote in LA, all that is required is a driver's license and a social security number--both which are easy to obtain with a green card (which Ms. Nour had). You are asked to verify that you are a US citizen, over 18, resident of California, not mentally incompetent, and not on parole--but it is still possible that Ms. Nour's registration was a mistake. She may have believed that her green card gave her the right to vote. She may very well be a US citizen, but the only people who can truly verify that are the Department of Homeland Security. As far as I know, they have not come forward regarding the citizenship issue of Ms. Nawal Abdel-Aziz Nour. Personally, I think the rule is a stupid one regardless. My guess is if she is not a US citizen, they will pass another rule stating that the candidate cannot have a sibling who is a citizen of another country as well.
