Pompey was born on September 29, 106 BCE as Gnaeus Pompeius and died as Pompey the Great at the age of 58 on September 28, 48 BCE. He gained his title Great for his efforts in eradicating the pirate menace, settling the Roman conquests first in Spain, then in the east as far as Palestine, bringing in great wealth personally and to Rome, and guaranteeing future tax revenues.

∙ 9y agoPompey the Great had been Rome's most successful general prior to Julius Caesar. He had defeated some Germanic peoples who had invaded the Roman Empire and were threatened Rome. Because of this he had been seen as the saviour of Rome. He had also won some other important wars. He had been, for a period of time, part of the first triumvirate, a three-man alliance with Crassus and Caesar, which dominated Roman Politics. After the death of Crassus the alliance fell apart. When Caesar started his civil war against the senate, Pompey led the forces of the senate until he was defeated by Caesar in Greece and was then murdered by the Egyptians.

were the members of the first triumvirate along with Julius Caesar. Both were military men, as was Caesar. Pompey fought under Sulla and made his fame and fortune in the east, while Crassus,
being one of the richest men in Rome, was the one who put down the Spartacus revolt. Pompey and Crassus
remained in Rome as consuls while Caesar was in Gaul.
