Sir walter Raleigh was one of the grand scalawags of the Elizabeth Age. He made a name for himself fighting the Irish at Munster; later he was indroduced at court and became a favorite of Queen Elizabeth 1.

His relatives were Sir Richard Grenville and Sir Humphrey Gilbert ( his half brother) in the court of Elizabeth 1 and James 1. At 17 he went to France to fight with the Huguenots and he became a favorite of Elizabeth. With his poetry and his flamboyant dress he became very famous.
He was knighted, probably because Queen Elizabeth 1, the queen of England, had a crush on Sir Walter Raleigh. (Or at the time Walter Raleigh!)
She didn't. James ! did, 15 years or so after Elizabeth 1 died.
i think there is one thing that Walter Raleigh do without Queen Elizabeth's permission. he married Bess Frokmall without letting Elizabeth 1 know!!

Queen Elizabeth 1 didn't send him to find a colony. Raleigh put together and invested in the Roanoke Voyages, though. He did travel to South America, but he did not travel himself to North America.
There is no evidence that John White ever met Queen Elizabeth. He was the Governor of the colony seated on Roanoke Island.

Virginia, since she was known as the "Virgin Queen."
Queen Elizabeth I was queen from 1558 to 1603. The lost colony of Roanoke was started in the 1580's.
