Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg (also known as 'Ena') is a former queen of Spain and wife of King Alfonso XIII. She served as the queen from May 31st, 1906 until April 14th, 1931 when the royal family abdicated Spain in order to help the country avoid a civil war. This proved to be unavoidable and the Nationalists and Republican factions fought a civil war that lasted until 1939 when the Nationalists were victorious and Francisco Franco became dictator of Spain. Franco remained in this position until his death in 1975. At this point Juan Carlos I (son of Queen Ena) re-established the ruling Spanish monarchy.
