No, at the end of all seven debates between the two men, Douglas beat Lincoln in the election to retain his Illinois senate seat. While it can be said that each man made important points, Senator Douglas had the edge having been the incumbent candidate.
Frederick Douglas, a former slave who had "escaped" his captivity became in the antebelum days an important scholar and commentator on the events in the United States. Many important people consulted him and his opinions were well respected. He was a frind of Lincoln's as example. He was also a good writer. With all that said, Douglas had no real impact on the US Civil War. With all respect, the events prior to, during and after the war had no tangible affects other than being important to his friends and critics.
The senator from Illinois, Stephen A. Douglas supported the right to have Territory citizens vote on the slavery issue before the territory became a State. He was the prime fore behind the Kansas - Nebraska Act of 1854. He called it popular sovereignty. He maintained this position in the 1858 senatorial race with Abraham Lincoln. Douglas won the election.
Stephen Douglas' Freeport Doctrine referred to the proposal that territories had the right to refuse slavery if they chose. This was against a Supreme Court decision. The doctrine was espoused in his debates with Abraham Lincoln in 1858.
Douglas was Senator for Illinois. He was largely responsible for the Compromise of 1850,which seemed to settle problems about slavery at the time. However,in 1854 he championed and forced through the Kansas-Nebraska Act,which opened up conflict about Free and Slave states again. So,he could be said to have first staved off,and then hastened, the American Civil War.
In 1858, it was evident that Lincoln opposed slavery. He said as much in his debates against Stephen Douglas, who was his opponent in the presidential race.
Illinois Senator Stephen A. Douglas may have been surprised that he was even challenged by Abraham Lincoln in the 1858 debates for the senate seat held by Douglas, but he did not harbor any personal animosity towards Lincoln. Douglas made this clear in the Bloomington speech. Douglas praised Lincoln's character and said that Lincoln had the ability to serve well as a senator. He mentioned that he had known Lincoln for 25 years. By the 25 year remark by Douglas, it was clear that his praise for Lincoln was not based on new found flattery.
Stephen Douglas believed in popular sovereignty. He said in the debate, "I ask you to reflect on these things, for I tell you that there is a conspiracy to carry this election for the Black Republicans by slander, and not by fair means."http://teachingamericanhistory.org/library/document/the-lincoln-douglas-debates-4th-debate-part-i/https://www.nps.gov/liho/learn/historyculture/debate1.htm
