Taft was Chief Justice under 3 different Presidents. The first was Warren Harding, by whom he was nominated, from 1921-1923. Following Taft he was Chief Justice under Calvin Coolidge for the entirety of his Presidency. Finally, he was Chief Justice for 11 months under Herbert Hoover before he died at the age of 72.

He was appointed to the court by President Harding and served while he ,Coolidge and Hoover were in office. You realize, of course, that the supreme court is totally independent of the president, once they take office .
