Samuel Freeman Miller was nominated to the US Supreme Court by Abraham Lincoln in 1862. Miller was an 1838 graduate of Transylvania University Medical School, and a practicing physician for ten years before becoming a lawyer. He read about law in his spare time, and passed the Kentucky bar in 1847.
While Miller favored emancipation, his decisions on the bench helped limit civil rights for African-Americans by allowing individuals and non-government enterprises to discriminate against individuals by race, under the theory that the 14th Amendment only applied to the States.
