Drum Major Academy was created in 1978.
Drum Major Institute was created in 1961.

Drum majors are usually assigned by the band director, at my school you have to talk to your band director to be eligible for drum major, and at the end of the year he announces the new drum major, but schools might do it differently.
Traditionally, a drum major does not play the drums. It is just the title. However, it is possible that a Drum Major would play the drums, though.

Typically the Drum Major is a Sergeant Major, however the current Drum Major is actually a Master Gunnery Sergeant. I don't know why this is, but one can assume that any E-9 can fill the position.
