It depends on which set of trials you are speaking of. If you are speaking of the Burning Times, there were thousands of men, women and even children persecuted for Witchcraft. In Salem there was also a ton of people accused but only 13 were unknown. Historians argued that those women accused held fertile land that could be used so neighbors who accuse them, it is also argued that those who started the trials suffered from psychological disorders. Regardless many were killed in Salem for no reason.
