John Brown came to the Kansas Territory to fight slavery. In May 1856 John Brown led a group that killed several proslavery settlers near Pottawatomie Creek.

Kansas was voting to come into the union as free or slave state. Both groups people for and against slavery flooded the territory to influence the vote. One of the men who came was John Brown with his sons into Lawrence. They murdered several proslavery people and the newspapers ran a headline calling Kansas BLOODY KANSAS.
With the slavery issue based on popular sovereignty, the territories would become slave or free depending on which side had more votes. Both antislavery Northerners and proslavery Southerners scrambled to settle Kansas. One fierce slavery opponent, John Brown, killed five proslavery people in a raid and started a small civil war that killed some 200 people from both sides.
There were no tornado related deaths in Kansas in 2000.

The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 called for "popular sovereignty." The decision about slavery was to be made by the settlers in Kansas rather than by outsiders. The decision as to whether Kansas would become a free state or a slave state would be decided by the votes of people in Kansas. Whichever side had more votes counted by officials would decide if Kansas would become a free state or a slave state.
John Brown and his sons entered Lawrence, Kansas and killed people thinking they could stop the vote for slavery. They literally chopped people with hatchets and the newspapers had headlines of "Bleeding Kansas."

Brown in Lawrence Kansas and murdered several people. He was an abolitionist and wanted to start something and keep people out that would vote for slavery.

we think that the number of people killed were 55-200. they do not know the exact number for sure but I have heard a lot more times that 200 people were killed.
