He was a pioneer, a trendsetter, and an inspiration. He was one of the first rock-n-rollers to write and produce his own music (though he often shared credit with his bandmates). His ordinary looks and quirky voice made younger musicians feel that if he could make it, they could too.
Buddy Holly is inspirational to me because he performed and wrote the kind of music he liked and wanted to write no matter what. He played with black musicians when it was uncommon at the time, especially in West Texas. He didn't try to change his image to look more "rock and roll" and wore his thick glasses to make himself stand out more as an individual. His songs were innovative, as was his band structure, going on to influence the setup that modern bands still use today. He was also one of the first rock and roll singer/songwriters.
Several people influenced Buddy Holly's sound and style, including (but not limited to) Hank Williams, Les Paul (especially with his guitar and recording techniques), Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bobby Darin, and of course Elvis Presley, who Buddy thought showed anyone could make it in the rock and roll business.
He died really young, which disappointed so many fans. He also went so far, so people were amazed.
His unique songs, that he wrote and performed..
