Some similarities between medieval and Renaissance music would be the type of notation used (the type developed by the end of the medieval period was used in the Renaissance, too.) also the cantus firmus(using a given melody to compose a polyphonic work)was still used but maybe more freely. The forms, fixes such as the rondeaux, viralaie and ballades were still used up to a certain point in the Renaissance. its mostly the change from focussing on the technical side of music in the medieval period to making music for expression and meaning in the renaissance.
Well, the Renaissance is divided into two parts: early and high. So really, the High Renaissance would be considered the transitional period between Early Renaissance and Baroque. In most of Europe, the High Renaissance lasted until about 1600, when the Baroque period began. In Italy, the High Renaissance technically lasted until 1600, but around 1520, another artistic movement became popular: Mannerism. Mannerism was a movement dominated by complicated, intellectual art. Allegories, distorted figures, and complicated compositions are characteristic of this movement. Other Italian artists persisted in the High Renaissance style, so that time frame (1520 to 1600) is still considered to be part of the High Renaissance.

The relationship between Sir Francis Drake and the Renaissance is only supportable in that he was an explorer and privateer during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I . This time in history was the height of the English Renaissance period. (Known as the "Elizabethan Era".) This was a time in which literature and English poetry blossomed. Authors and playwrights such as William Shakespeare and the sort exploded in theaters of the time. (One of special note was the Elizabethan Theater.) It was also a time when exploration and expansion of the realms of English influence sprang forward from England. Sir Francis Drake was known through history for circumnavigating the globe. While considered a pirate by Spain, he was commonly referred to as a hero in England. While, I don't believe that the Renaissance was influenced by Drake, his most notable and historically documented exploits occurred during this period. Therefore, his contributions to the Renaissance should be recognized as exploration/circumnavigation of the world.
