A thief was on one side (another criminal on the other side). The thief confessed that Jesus was the messiah and that Jesus was unjustly crucified. Jesus responded by promising the thief that "today you will be with me in paradise".

The two men were thieves hanging on either side of Jesus who was in the centre.

Matt.27:38 says "Then two robbers were crucified with Him, one on the right and another on the left. "

Mark's gospel says 2 robbers also.

Luke's gospel says 2 criminals.

John's gospel says He was crucified with 2 others one on either side.
