After Nero offed himself, there was chaos. First old Galba became emperor, then because mainly due to his mishandling of the army, he was overthrown and Otho became emperor, who in turn was defeated by the forces of Vitalius. Vitalius was deposed and was followed by Vespasian who was able to keep order and establish his own dynasty. As all this happened in one year, it became known as "the year of the four emperors".
