No, he was born in Ohio, a northern state. The first southerner president after the Civil War is Woodrow Wilson.
U. S. Grant (#18) was the first president actually born in Ohio. Wm. Henry Harrison (#9) was living in Ohio when he was elected President and served a US Senator from Ohio.
He was elected president by the people all over the US. He spent most of campaign on his porch in Canton, Ohio so you could say that was where he was elected - at least that is where HE was when he was elected.
William Henry Harrison , 9th president, was the first Ohio resident to become President. He served in the Ohio statehouse and represented Ohio in the both houses of the US Congress. ( He was born in VA and lived in Indiana before he settled permanently in Ohio.) Ulysses Grant (18th president) was the first President born in Ohio.Ulysses S. Grant

I get 6/43 = 13.95 % of US presidents from Ohio, Although Obama is often called the 44th president, there have only been 43 different presidents. I did not count Grant and B, Harrison as being from Ohio since they were not from Ohio when they were elected even though they were born there. I did count W.H. Harrison who was born in Virginia but was living in Ohio when he was elected. So,the six presidents "from" Ohio were W.H.Harrison, Hayes, Garfield, McKinley, Taft and Harding.
