∙ 12y agoArlington was owned by decendents of Martha Washington (George Washington's wife) -the Custis family. The daughter Mary Anna Custis married Robert E. Lee. As part of Lee's surrender he had to also surrender the property. There were MANY soldiers buried there when it was used by Civil War troops. The first to be buried there I did not find but here is a link to the history.
