General Lewis Armistead had approximately 1,000 men under his command to defend Fort Sumter during the initial battle in April 1861. These troops were part of the Confederate forces that besieged the fort, which was held by Union soldiers. The number of defenders was significantly smaller than the attacking forces, leading to the eventual surrender of the fort.
