The famous Birmingham Alabama police hosings were conducted under the auspices of Eugene "Bull" Connor, one of three city commissioners at that time. A rabid racist, Bull Connor was determined that segregation was going to be maintained under his administration. With the apparent blessings of the other two commissioners, he directed the police to engage in riot control measures like the hosings of the civil rights activists. The images still stir stron feelings today.

Bull Connor tried to win election many times for governor of Alabama, but never succeeded. Most of his career in politics centered in Birmingham. He died in 1973, still a segregationist.
