∙ 8y agoSmith worked for the Ashley and Henry partnership as he began his adventures in 1822. Later he became a partner with Ashley, and then he had a partnership as Smith, Jackson and Sublette. Smith was never a free trapper until his final and fatal trip towards Taos. It is not correct to say he did not work for any company. He was a trapper, guide, and explorer. For many years he lived among the Native Americans of central CA and hunted in the Sierra Nevada mountains. He was one of the first white men to enter Yosemite valley, and was kicked out of CA by the Mexican government several times.
