This was John the Baptist. What he actually said was that he would not be fit to untie the laces on Jesus' shoes. This was extremely significant as on the dusty paths in those days, feet got dirty and smelly in their open sandals. The removal of shoes and the washing of feet was a menial and unpleasant task performed by slaves. By John saying this, he was diverting attention from himself that he rightly received from the people as a prophet to them, onto Jesus whom he saw as the Messiah and whom he saw from the point of view of a slave and his master.
