Who was known as the furies?

In ancient Greek, they were known as the Erinyes and in Latin, the Dirae. And while to the ancients, they were of an indeterminate number, but three of them were named by Virgil: Alecto (unyielding), Megaera (grudging) and Tisiphone (vengeance).

They are considered Cthonic (infernal) dieties and predate the Olympians. According to the Iliad, they are "those who beneath the earth punish whosoever has sworn a false oath."
