Massa Waller
They met when Kunta Kinte was undergoing initiation and he was sent on a mission to catch a bird. It was during his mission that he ran into Fanta and her family (dad and brothers) who were on their way to a nearby village. Kunta Kinte subsequently meets Fanta on the slave ship as well as at the auction when they landed in America.
Kunta Kinte's foot was cut off as a punishment after he repeatedly tried to escape from slavery. It was done to serve as a deterrent to other enslaved individuals and as a way to assert dominance and control.
In "Roots," Kunta Kinte met his wife, Bell, during his time on the Waller plantation. They developed a romantic relationship and eventually got married through a traditional African ceremony despite the conditions of slavery.
Kunta Kinte was a character in Alex Haley's novel "Roots: The Saga of an American Family." He was a young African man who was captured and enslaved in the United States. His story highlights the brutal realities of the transatlantic slave trade and the resilience of African heritage in the face of oppression.
Being captured and removed from his family and homeland into a world of involuntary servitude as a teenager had to be frightening to say the least. He was physically and verbally abused from the beginning, did not understand the language or customs, and never knew when he would be the recipient of his masters wrath. It was portrayed that he was raised in an atmosphere of respect and dignity then thrust into a world where he was regarded and treated as worthless animal whose only purpose was to serve his tormentors.
