In the beginning, Britain was basically fighting to defend itself all alone. There were Americans that joined the RAF, but as a country the USA did not join till much later in the war. Russia was fighting the Nazis too, but could hardly be said to be defending Britain, they were spending all their energies defending themselves. After the USA joined the war, they were the primary nation to defend Britain.
Appeasement was bad because it showed the Germans that the French and British were weak. It showed that the Allies had no desire to go to war, and this only encouraged Hitler to demand more without fear of reprisal.
A member of a Serbian terrorist group assassinated the Austrian Archduke Francis Ferdinand and his wife Sofia. Germany, who was allied with Austria at the time, wanted to defend its one dependable ally. Russia was a Slavic country, and wanted to help defend Serbia since it was a Slavic country as well. France didn't want to battle Germany alone without allied help. Belgium, which was a neutral country, was invaded by Germany in order to be able to flank France from the North. Britain was enraged by the invasion of Belgium.
Switzerland declared itself neutral. And billions of dollars were stored in Swiss banks belonging to both Allied and Axis countries. All tacitly agreed to leave Switzerland alone, obviously.

The policy of appeasement was used by the French and British to appease Hitler in the hopes that Hitler would leave their nations alone. The "appeasement camp" thought that if Hitler was given what he wanted he would be satisfied. They did not understand Hitler and his agendas. They Brits and French were made to look like fools when they found out Hitler had already taken the the Sudetenland at the time of the Munich Conference and signing of the pact that allowed Hitler to have the Sudetenland within Czechoslovakia. The policy appeasement is as foolish as giving your lunch to the school bully when he will only come back the next day.
Itself and alone mean the same thing!
Appeasement was the policy Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain and the French leader used to try to keep Hitler from invading their nations. They chose to "allow" Hitler to have the Sudetenland (amending the Treaty of Versailles). Well, that policy made them look like fools. Hitler was not appeased. He flat out told them he had already sent his troops into the Sudetenland and the Munich Pact was a joke to him. Appeasement is like dealing with a schoolyard bully who steals your lunch. You give him your lunch instead hoping he will leave you alone. The next day he not only steals your lunch he beats you up. You can't appease a bully. Just asked the millions of abused women and children.
Some ways a penguin can defend itself is by swimming away, but that doesn't always work when it is alone so that is why it swims in groups.
Generally speaking, appeasement is a foreign policy term that speaks to a nations relationships to other nations. A nation with a foreign policy of appeasement usually infers that certain types of unruly behavior is allowed by other nations as a way to maintain peace, rather than confrontation other than dialogues concerning the situation. The classic example of this appeasement policy is the way France and England allowed Nazi Germany to break the Treaty of Versailles and other situations. The Allies, France and England, went along or appeased Hitler in order to avoid a war. If appeasement is practiced where issues are minor, then perhaps accommodation is a better term.
