Jiang Qing, born Li Shumeng, was a movie actress when she met Mao Tse-tung in the late 1930s. She appeared in only one known picture, Lang shan die xue ji, made in 1936 (Translation: The Wolf Hill). Jiang Qing and Mao were married in 1939. She was an egalitarian Communist and participated in the 1966-1969 Chinese Cultural Revolution as the leader of the infamous Gang of Four. She was also part of a group that tried to take over the Chinese government after Chairman Mao's death in 1976, and was imprisoned for her crime in 1981. Although she was originally sentenced to death, the court later commuted her sentence to life in prison. Jiang Qing committed suicide by hanging on May 14, 1991.
