Napoleon Bonaparte started as a young artillery officer and ended as a French emperor.

Trained as as an artillery officer, he achieved great successes and great fame during the wars waged by or against the French revolutionaries. He became a general under the French Revolution. He is usually referred as Bonaparte for that period, to help distinguish from the period when he was in power.

The historical period of the French revolution ends with his coup in November 1799. He gathered a very broad support as (former) revolutionaries still saw in him a soldier of the Republic, while the clergy and the bourgeoisie saw an opportunity to move away from the excesses of the revolution.

As an emperor he brought back political stability and restaured much of the influence of the Catholic church.

Various countries engaged in alliances against France when he was emperor. Napoleon (as he is referred after 1799) fought these alliances during a long time, and conquered much of Europe. However, the disastrous Russian campaign in 1812 weakened the French army and ultimately allowed a last coalition to defeat him in 1815.
