The word refers to the main type of grain that's grown in an area. So corn means barley in North Africa, barley or wheat in England and Wales, and oats in Ireland and Scotland. [2] The plant corn is thought to have originated in Central America or Mexico. There are some, however, who think that the plant may have originated in the highlands of Peru. It's thought to be some 7,000-9,000 years old. It's in the grass family. And it's thought to have an unknown common ancestor with teosinte grass of Mexico.
