The Luna 1 was an unmanned Soviet probe to the moon.

Luna 2 and Luna 3 were launched on September 12, 1959 and October 4 1959 and it started orbit the moon from September 13 1959 and October 6th 1959 respectively.
The first Luna spacecraft was launched by the Soviet Union (Russia) in 1959. Luna 1 was the first spacecraft to reach the vicinity of the Moon.

Luna 1 was a Soviet spacecraft that was launched in 1959. It did not orbit the sun directly, but it was the first spacecraft to reach the vicinity of the moon, passing within 6,000 kilometers of the lunar surface before continuing on into orbit around the sun.
So far only the USA have put a man on the Moon. I want to add that many other countries have sent unmanned probes and satellites to the moon. These countries are China (in 2007), Japan (in 1990 and in 2007) and USSR (January 1959 (Luna 1), September 1959 (Luna 2), October 1959 ( Luna 3), January 1966 (Luna 9), march 1966 (Luna 10),august 1966 (Luna 11), October 1966 (Luna 12), July 1969 (Luna 15), 1970 (Luna 16),1970 (Lunokhod 1), 1973 (Lunokhod 2) and in 1976 (Luna 24)).It is also important to note that the USSR was the first country to reach the moon. But the USA was the first country to send a man to the moon.

The probe that launched on January 2, 1959, is called Luna 1. It was the first spacecraft to reach the vicinity of the Moon and was part of the Soviet Union's Luna program. Luna 1 was intended to impact the Moon but instead entered orbit around the Sun, making it the first human-made object to reach that region of space.
The first space probe was the Luna I by the United Soviet Socialist Republic. It did a flyby of the moon in 1959
