Despite winning the popular vote in the 1888 election, he would ultimately lose the presidency, only to regain it in the 1892 re-election.

Chester Alan Arthur was the 21st President of the United States from 1881 September 19 to 1885 March 4. Vice President in 1881 from March 4 to December 19, he ascended to the presidency after the assassination of President James Abram Garfield. Due to health problems, Arthur did not seriously run for a second term, and was succeeded by Cleveland as president. Arthur would die a year and a half after his presidency, on 1886 November 18.
