Horace Mann (the first Secretary of the Board of Education in the State of Massachusetts) created the first Normal School in Lexington, Massachusetts in 1839. It was financed by a donation from Edmund Dwight of $10,000, which was then matched by the State Legislature. Mann chose Cyrus Peirce, a well known teacher in Nantucket, to lead the school. Three other schools were created in the state at the same time. Because the development of these schools met so much initial opposition, they were designed to be a three-year experiment. In 1842, the schools were claimed to be a success and the movement spread throughout the nation.
