The fire started in September 1666 in a baker's shop in Pudding Lane. The baker left his oven unattended and burning material fell from it and started the fire. It had been a particularly dry summer and the wood in the houses burned easily so the fire spread rapidly. 27000 houses, 87 churches and a cathedral were destroyed in the fire but remarkably, very few people were killed.
