You live in New London Iowa and you are currently renting Whose responsibility is it to remove bugs from the home you have an abundance of Japanese beetles and the landlord says no chemicals?

I would say the landlord is responsible for extermination and any pest infestation, but these beetles are especially brutal! But I don't know the legal answer. There is one kind of pesticide that starts with a "p" that kills them, but I'm not so sure it would get rid of them all now because they are everywhere! And it would be very expensive to repeat the process. They get inside the attic, walls, window sills, etc. They will leave if they can in the spring because they only come inside to "overwinter", they come in in the fall and leave in when it gets warm, but once inside, they are trapped and often can't get out, and it's a long, tedious process to get rid of them. But you can do it, and I doubt you want your landlord inside every day. Interestingly, these ladybug type beetles are only attracted to light colored houses to spend the winter in, too: beige, white, yellow, etc. I'm in MO and I am getting rid of them myself this way: and don't laugh! It works! Get a couple of gallon (or whatever size) milk jugs, I am using old glass ones, with small openings so they can't crawl out. Fill it half with water. Squirt a little dishwashing liquid into the water but don't let it get sudsy, add one tablespoon of regular vinegar, and one tablespoon of sugar. They will be attracted to the smell, go in, and drown. They come out of the walls, etc. when it gets warm, and they love windows. If you have windowsills, put the jugs on those. My house was infested, and in one day, in one jar, I caught over 100. Those that you can't trap in jugs, you must suck up with a little dust-buster. Put one of those knee-high stockings in the dust-buster or they will "bleed" which stains (that's why you shouldn't ever swat them) and shoot off an offending odor, their way to defend themselves. You don't want to wreck the dust-buster. You will be rid of them in a couple of weeks. For next fall, you will have to have the landlord caulk every opening on the outside of the house: the windows, doors, attic, sophits, everywhere they can come in. Check the attic, etc. My best advice if you can't stand it and the landlord won't help or you can't get rid of them yourself? Move to a dark-colored house because they WILL be back next fall!
