Captain James Cook was the first to cross the Antarctic Circle, doing so in 1773. However, pack ice and the freezing of his ship's sails prevented him from reaching the Antarctic continent itself. The same thing happened when he again crossed the Antarctic Circle a year later. Captain Thaddeus Bellingshausen, representing a Russian expedition, is said to have been the first to discover the actual continent of Antarctica, doing so in 1820.
