The first American general in command in China was a salty old professional known as "Vinegar Joe" Stilwell. Stilwell could barely stand to be in the presence of Chiang Kai Shek, the Chinese leader recognized by the west, whom he called "peanut" in his journal, or sometimes "Cash my Check". Chiang was of course a completely corrupt warlord, who wanted all the military supplies the US could produce sent to him, so he could hoard them for his battle with the REAL enemy, the Chinese Communists under Mao, once the US had disposed of the Japanese for him. So he was naturally saving his strength for that showdown, and doing extremely little about ejecting the Japanese, no matter how many thousands of tons of supplies were sent to his remote hideout in central China, at great expense and excruciating effort. None of this was acceptable to Stilwell, and eventually Chiang sensed his attitude and insisted that he be replaced.
