The Original commander of the 54th Mass was Robert Gould Shaw of Boston, Mass and Staten Is, New York.
After his death at Fort Wagener, SC in 1863 the command fell to Edward Nettles Hallowell, formerly of the famous 20th Massachucetts Vols.
