The Portuguese were the first Europeans to sail directly to Asia. They were first to reach the shores of India, China, Indonesia and several other places.
The first explorers from Portugal arrived in Calicut, Kerala in India in 1498 led by the explorer Vasco da Gama in search for new trade routes and the famed Indian spices. It was the first time that someone traveled from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean. The trip was authorized by the Portuguese Crown in search for more resources and to consolidate their hold on the Indian ocean trade network.
Vasco da Gama (Portuguese) was the first to reach India with the direct route from Europe to India. His expedition from Europe to India and back was almost a two year voyage.
The first European to reach India by sea in 1498 was Dom Vasco da Gama. This discovery paved the way for a Portuguese colonial empire in Asia.
